Essay: Social Conformity Factors

Sample Essay

Through their study the researchers “proposed a tripartite distinction among one’s motives for norm conformity, acknowledging (a) accuracy, (b) self-related, and (c) other-related motives.

We assume that when motivated for accuracy reasons, individuals comply with norms because they believe the behavior of others provides cues for adaptive, successful behavior. Especially in situations with uncertain outcomes, people are likely to look to social consensus for information about how to proceed. When motivated by self-related reasons, individuals conform to norms because of both the social identity adopted by performing the behavior and the implications conformity has for the self”. (Pool & Schwegler, 2007)

Previous research undertaken on the topic of conformity of social roles indicates that conformity is aggravated and influenced by the elements of surveillance, unanimity of others in the society towards social orientation as well as other unidentified stimuli. The absence of these elements tends to restrict conformity which as a result may not take place at all. In a study, “using college students as subjects, the researcher posed as a pollster asking for responses to six statements on public issues. The falsified results of an earlier “national college sample” were used as the majority consensus stimulus. A written questionnaire was administered in private, and then placed in a locked ballot box. This study found no evidence of conformity, suggesting that when people have definite attitudes, and when others are not unanimous in their opinions, the social pressures produced by surveillance are necessary in order to produce conformity” (Tyson & Kaplowitz, 1977) Therefore in order fro conformity to take the place the above mentioned elements have to play an active part in enforcing the individual to confirm to different social roles.
